The Decemberists: The Crane Wife
Flight of the Conchords: Flight of the Conchords
Ryan Montbleau Band: One Fine Color
The Decemberists--I would say The Crane Wife is their best album. I love "O Valencia" [great running music]. The band most often described as "cerebral" this is a band that loves to kill off characters [Valencia dies in a gang fight] with the sweetest melodies ever.
For the love of novelty, I love "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" they are just adorable. And whoa they actually make good parody folk rap comedy songs. like songs I want to listen to again for musical value.
Ryan Montbleau Band, the as-of-yet undiscovered band that I adore. I've seen them live at least five times, going on six in January. Their first album is the most comprehensive which begs for comparison to Van Morrison. Really a guy with a guitar and his friends who play various instruments, they are as grassroots indie as it gets. and are just really really good.
2007
Amy Winehouse: Back To Black
Once: Music From The Motion Picture
Amy Winehouse, before all her cracked-out glory that was 2008, put out a great pop-blues-soul album.
I just recently watched Once and I loved loved loved it. The music was so touching and raw. An answer to all the break-up albums of the world, Once is a falling in love album, even if only for a moment or two.
2008
Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend
She & Him: Volume One
Taylor Swift: Fearless
Two great debuts and a coming-into-her-own of sorts.
Vampire Weekend-punk without scariness? Can't think of a better way to describe them. They are just adorably clean-cut. as is their music in the best way possible. Can't wait for their sophomore album in 2010!
She & Him's Volume One, Paste Magazine's number one album of 2008, with Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward was either loved or hated. I loved it. maybe because of my intense love of both Miss Deschanel and M. Ward in their other projects. But their weird folky-pop-indie vibe of music is just like fun to listen over and over and works really well as an album all together.
Taylor Swift, ah, I'm under the age of twenty and a girl. I LOVE TAYLOR SWIFT. I mean she seems like the kind of girl you want to be your best friend. And while this may not be one of the most musical, I will listen to it when I am older and think about this decade's music.
2009
The Avett Brothers: I and Love and You
Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion
Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Passion Pit: Manners
I loved this year in folk/indie/rock/dance music! All five of these albums could easily be some of my favorites of all time. The Avett Brothers' have been loved by Paste and NPR all year long. Animal Collective danceable as it is confusing but I loved what Bart Blasengame said about the goofy sounding lyrics "I have absolutely no idea what that means, and I don’t care—print it up, put it on a T-shirt and hand me that glow stick'' in his review from January. It seems I have an obsession with dance music this year, but Phoenix, in all their incomprehensible lyrics and chaotic beats, made music that I love to listen to.
And....
Passion Pit, possibly my favorite album over the year, except maybe Avett Brothers' which may be my favorite album of the decade, is so good. it is just so much fun to listen to over and over again.
whoo hooo. stayed tuned for best of movies.
and MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!
